Planning shots for better videos! | #Jan30 24

Hi Jasper from Yellow Glove Productions.

Preparation is key for every video project. Whether it’s a short Jan30 video like this, a property tour or one of our signature branding videos. There are certain things that we can do to make sure we get the best video possible.

One of those things is creating a shot list. It’s a concept that sounds simple but it really helps to ensure that we create a great video that’s representative of the business or individual being filmed.

So how do we come up with these lists?

First, we create a script. this allows us to gauge what needs to be highlighted within the video. It could be a certain aspect of the business like customer service or a particular product being sold.

The script can also allow us to highlight smaller details for the video as well. For example, if it’s a family run business then we know to get footage of the family interacting with each other and working together. If the business has won awards then we need to make sure we make reference to that when filming as well.

A lot of thought gets put into the shot list, I think of it as “how would I tell this client’s story if there was no audio?”.

Though we require the audio of the script to convey the message the business wants to put across,

visually we need to create information in every new frame on video, giving the viewer footage that they can learn from.

Shot lists allow for further creativity when it comes to a project.

Some may think that meticulously planning of footage can box in any creative freedom when it comes to the client’s video, but the truth is that by planning for certain shots, once our ideas and client’s ideas are on paper, even more plans for creative footage can be generated.

We can think up new ways to tell the client’s story by putting lot’s of thought into each camera movement.

This kind of planning after creating the script with the client is a big thing that separates the amateurs from the pros. If you’re paying myself and my team to create video content that is putting your brand out there, then you are going to want and need the advice and skillset of experts.

If there are particular shots you want on your filming day then we can plan for it so there’s no messing around on the day trying to figure out how to achieve what you wanted on video.

To sum everything up, processes like creating shot lists are just one of the many things that often don’t get thought about when businesses and individuals are looking to hire video production teams, often clients will find out just how much creativity it can bring to projects and the results it can actually achieve for their videos.

As I said at the start of today’s video, preparation is key for every project.

Thanks for watching today, speak to you tomorrow, bye for now!
