Suck at something new! Chatting to Photographer Matt Glover | #Jan30 05

Matt Glover and I sat down after our walking meeting today to talk about an Instagram post by Cool As Leicester! "Be brave enough to suck at something new" is what it said, great advice that Matt and I can relate to after starting and finding huge success with our branding packages in the first lock down. Have you been trying anything new lately? Is there something you want to improve?

Jasper:

Hello, everyone. Jasper from Yellow Glove Productions here.

Matt:

Happy new year. I'm Matt.

Jasper:

I'm here today with Matt Glover. As you know, myself and Matt have been working together doing branding packages throughout 2020. It's been lots of fun, and-

Matt:

It's been amazing.

Jasper:

Yeah, and today, what are we going to talk about?

Matt:

We are talking about the can-do's.

Jasper:

The can-do's

Matt:

The can-do's of 2021.

Jasper:

So you were saying, Matt, that you saw a post on Instagram.

Matt:

I did, yes. It was by Cool As Leicester. And it was a little poster that said, "Suck at something new." So yeah, our point is really, it's like, I suppose, getting on with stuff, isn't it? Like learning as you're going. We started our own little brand video during lockdown on Zoom, didn't we? And it wasn't perfect at all. However-

Jasper:

We just got out there, didn't we?

Matt:

But didn't it get us work immediately?

Jasper:

Yeah, it was really, really good. Like it said, "Suck at something new." I think that's a really good quote. And we didn't ... I was saying just a moment ago-

Matt:

We weren't really sucky.

Jasper:

We don't suck, we're not really bad at what we do, but it was the fact that we were doing something new in lockdown and making it work for us, weren't we?

Matt:

Yeah, my whole approach to everything with the whole, "Tier this, tier that, lockdown this, [inaudible 00:01:15]," it's not worrying about what we can't do, but just focusing on what we can do.

Jasper:

Yeah.

Matt:

And actually, we looked at, you can video, and you managed to put together that video for us, which actually, that was what we could do. And actually, it did get us work, and we've started our own brand, actually, within our own, within brands.

Jasper:

And that video, as well, despite it not being the most amazing thing ever, it got a really response.

Matt:

It got our message out there! It got our message out there. And then we continued with it and we got better. And now we've got regular clients now, and also we've got new ones coming in this year, as well.

Jasper:

Yeah, so that was our 2020, and now 2021, like you said, we've got regular clients.

Matt:

So we don't even suck anymore! We never sucked, though. That was the point, we don't suck. We don't suck.

Jasper:

We're all right. We're all right.

Matt:

Yeah.

Jasper:

We've got a retained client now, both of us.

Matt:

So there's something new, it's like, it's the attitude of that we don't know all the answers, but if you just sit down and just focus on not knowing the answers or what you can't do, you won't get anywhere, really, wouldn't you?

Jasper:

That's it.

Matt:

That was almost a word.

Jasper:

And now, I think the words, "Lockdown," and just trying something new-

Matt:

Restrictions!

Jasper:

It just goes together, yeah. Work with what you can do, and improve.

Matt:

Yes. It's all about what you can do, not what you can't do.

Jasper:

Buzz words.

Matt:

Those words. Suck at something new.

Jasper:

Any final words on that? Anything-

Matt:

Just carry on sucking at new things.

Jasper:

That's good. That's good.

Matt:

Or don't suck at new things. Suck at new things and then become really good at them.

Jasper:

Improve yourself.

Matt:

Yes.

Jasper:

Thanks for watching.

Matt:

2021! Yes!
