Bringing the Mr Porky Brand to Life Through Video Production for a Sky Sports Sponsorship

If you’ve been following Yellow Glove Productions for a while, you’ll know we have a knack for flipping cameras around tables, especially when it comes to advertising pork scratchings. For our second shoot with the nation’s favourite scratching brand, Mr Porky, we took things up a notch.

Our friends at Luke James Digital needed an engaging advert that seamlessly transitioned from the pub to home, much like a previous successful YouTube ad we created. This time, the advert was part of Mr Porky’s Sky Sports Darts sponsorship, meaning we had to integrate a strong darts theme while keeping the ad engaging and relevant for its audience. Our solution? Building an entire pub inside a studio.

The Ad Concept & Execution

In 20 seconds we needed to show a dart game, friends catching up, product in a pub, product in a living room and then switch to an animation!

We start with a transition from a darts game to a busy pub setting, to create the dart throw sequence, we combined practical effects with digital enhancements, because, as it turns out, no one on set could land a dart in the exact same spot every time. We got as close as possible with real throws, then used editing magic to refine the effect. The dramatic crash zoom out was achieved with a combination of a practical slider shot and digital zoom, keeping the motion seamless. If you love breaking down ads frame by frame, you might just spot the cut.

Once we revealed the pub environment, we needed to transition smoothly to the product shot. Our actor, Ken, simply carried his beer over from the bar and sat down to meet his friend, a natural movement that motivated the camera shift to the overhead top-down shot.

From there, we used our custom-built rig, "Barry", to create the signature flip effect. After capturing the bar flip, we quickly reset the scene to film the living room environment, featuring a green screen TV that was seamlessly zoomed into for the animated outro.

Ad Placement & Performance

So far, the Mr Porky Flip Ad has amassed over 1.1 million views on YouTube, proof that bold, creative concepts drive engagement. Following the success of the previous flip ad, Luke James Digital executed a strong marketing strategy to ensure this ad reached the right audience, namely, darts fans watching on-demand via Sky Sports.

Understanding the right time for media spend was crucial in this campaign. By aligning the ad with major darts events and placing it within relevant content, we ensured that viewers were already engaged with the theme of the advert. Digital advertising allowed Luke James Digital to target specific demographics effectively, whereas traditional TV and print ads would have been more generalised and, of course, would not have produced the same special effects wow factor our video ad did. The ability to track engagement metrics in real time also helped optimise performance, demonstrating the impact of strategic media planning.
